Billy was found dead at his log cabin in Davidson County, Tennessee, around 2 a.m. on Christmas Day. At the time, authorities confirmed that he was legally drunk. The family recalls that Billy had been upbeat the day before his death, even getting a haircut and buying new clothes, as shared by his friend Buddy Frank, who visited him just hours before. Billy, who had aspirations of releasing an album of original gospel songs, struggled with depression, a battle his sister Lana spoke about in the series: “He didn’t want to be depressed, he didn’t want to be that guy. He tried really hard, he did.”

Paula, Willie’s daughter from his third marriage to Connie Koepke, shared how difficult the loss was, particularly for Willie, saying, “It was terribly hard on him — on all of us. It was really hard for him because that was his first son.” Nelson’s business manager, Mark Rothbaum, added that Billy had often expressed frustration with how his father had been treated and felt exploited throughout his life, which may have contributed to his struggles.

Billy’s sister Susie, who was only 17 months apart from him, reflected on their close bond, saying, “We did everything together, but he had a lot of issues. They became more and more.” The docuseries also reveals that after Billy’s tragic passing, Nelson’s family grew even closer. Willie’s late sister Bobbie said, “It’s not that we had long talks about our grief — that’s not Willie’s way. We didn’t have to talk about it. We knew.”

Although Willie Nelson speaks briefly about the tragedy, stating, “Those were bad times,” he also touches on the other challenges he faced during the same period, including his struggles with the IRS and a demanding performance schedule.
