Majella O’Donnell, the wife of country star Daniel O’Donnell, has opened up about her mental health journey, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown. While Majella has long struggled with depression, she shared that the pandemic brought an unexpected silver lining for her, offering her quality time at home with her husband, something she doesn’t usually get due to his busy touring schedule.
Speaking to RSVP Live, Majella revealed that, although she didn’t enjoy the lockdown itself, she appreciated the slower pace it brought. “I’m blessed to have that,” she said, referencing the peaceful setting of their home, which is surrounded by a lovely garden and space to relax. Majella explained that, being naturally a solitary person, she didn’t feel the same level of stress that some others might have experienced during the lockdown. The quiet, calm atmosphere helped alleviate some of the mental strains she might have felt otherwise, as she was able to spend uninterrupted time with Daniel.
Though she has faced significant mental health challenges for many years, Majella emphasized that her time at home with Daniel was a source of comfort. “I didn’t find it too bad because I’m kind of a solitary person anyway. I enjoy my own company,” she said, adding that, while lockdown was difficult for many, she felt especially sorry for younger generations who were missing out on the social experiences and relationships that are typically a key part of their lives.
Majella acknowledged that, while her personal struggles with depression remain a part of her life, she is more equipped to manage them today. Having dealt with the condition for so long, she now recognizes when her mental health starts to decline, such as when she’s overtired or stressed. Her coping strategies include ensuring she doesn’t take on too much at once, prioritizing adequate sleep, and going for walks, which help to improve her well-being.
“I’m on medication anyway, I’ve been on antidepressants for a long time,” Majella shared, noting that she has sought medical advice at times when needed. She now feels much more in control of her mental health, learning to manage it in a way that works for her.
In addition to her personal mental health journey, Majella is also dedicated to helping others. She runs Donegal Wellness, a charity focused on supporting mental health, and has recently launched several wellness cafés around Donegal. These cafés provide a safe and welcoming space for people to gather, chat, and enjoy a cup of tea together. Majella sees these cafés as vital in the post-pandemic period, offering a much-needed opportunity for people to reconnect and support one another’s well-being. Currently, there are ten wellness cafés in Donegal, with plans to expand them online.
Majella’s openness about her own struggles with depression and her efforts to provide support for others are a testament to her resilience and compassion. By creating spaces where people can talk openly and honestly about their mental health, she is making a meaningful difference in her community. As she and Daniel continue to navigate life, Majella’s efforts to manage her own health while helping others are a source of inspiration.
