Miley Cyrus recently opened up about a humorous and somewhat surprising memory from her time on the set of Hannah Montana, revealing a bit about her father, Billy Ray Cyrus’ antics during the show’s run. On the Sorry We’re Cyrus podcast, where Miley was joined by her mother, Tish Cyrus, and her sister, Brandi Cyrus, Miley was asked about core memories from the set that still make her laugh. Without missing a beat, Miley responded with a chuckle, saying, “Dad smoking pot and everyone blaming me for it.”
Her mom, Tish, laughed along with Miley, while Brandi shot a playful look at her. Tish, who was married to Billy Ray for nearly three decades before their divorce in 2022, recalled that she would often get calls about Billy Ray smoking pot during the show. However, she vehemently denied the claims at the time, saying, “I was saying, ‘Absolutely not, he would never do that.’” Instead, the family would humorously blame Miley’s Hannah Montana co-star, Mitchel Musso, who played Oliver Oken, for the alleged smoking. Musso, however, was quick to respond to the playful claim, telling E! News, “Well, that’s not how I remember it. However, I’ve got plenty of stories from those years that might be worth having a conversation about. If we’re revisiting Hannah Montana history — just say the word.”
Despite the playful back-and-forth, a rep for Billy Ray had no comment when reached by PEOPLE.
Miley’s reflection on her childhood and family dynamic comes as she’s been busy promoting her music. Recently, she also appeared on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast, where she spoke about the challenges her family has faced, particularly in the aftermath of her parents’ divorce. Miley confessed that her family went through a “dark decade,” a time when communication between family members was strained. She shared that there was a period when half of the family wasn’t speaking to each other, but they have since made strides in repairing those relationships. Miley expressed the importance of cleaning up emotional issues as they arise, saying, “I watched what happens when you don’t clean things up as they’re happening. They really do stack, and then all of a sudden you go, ‘Oh my God, it’s been 10 years, and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start.’”
Now that things have improved, Miley is channeling these personal experiences into her music. She revealed that she had even written a song about her family’s emotional journey, titled “Secrets,” which she plans to include on a future album.
Miley’s family dynamics, including her relationship with her parents, Billy Ray and Tish, as well as her siblings, Braison, Noah, Brandi, and Trace, have been a significant part of her personal and professional growth. Her openness about these moments gives fans a deeper understanding of the complex relationships that shape her life.
