SAD NEWS: Country music icon Dolly Parton, now 79, has spoken out for the first time since the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March at the age of 82.

Dolly Parton Mourns Late Husband Carl Dean: “He’s Not Suffering Anymore, But the Loneliness Remains”

For nearly six decades, Carl Dean was the quiet heart behind one of the world’s most recognizable stars. Now, as Dolly Parton learns to navigate life without him, she holds fast to love, faith, and memory.

In a recent interview with The Independent, the 79-year-old country icon opened up for the first time since Dean’s death in March at age 82. With characteristic honesty and grace, Dolly revealed that Carl had “been ill for quite a while” before his passing—and while she’s at peace knowing his suffering is over, the ache of his absence is still fresh.

“I really feel his presence,” she said softly. “I just try to go on, because I know I have to. But that still doesn’t make up for the loss and the loneliness of it.”

Their love story, one of country music’s most enduring, began by chance on a Nashville street in 1964. “I was just walking around the neighborhood, and this guy hollered at me. I waved—being from the country, I talked to everybody,” she recalled. “And it was Carl. I hadn’t planned to fall in love, but you know how love is.”

Two years later, they quietly wed, beginning a lifelong partnership that, while largely kept out of the public eye, formed the bedrock of Dolly’s life. Dean never sought fame, rarely gave interviews, and remained steadfastly private—but he was always, she says, her greatest champion.

“I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old,” Dolly shared on Instagram. “We spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and in song.”

That memory now finds voice in “If You Hadn’t Been There,” a poignant tribute Dolly dedicated to her late husband. “I see him in everything,” she said. “In my heart, in our home, in the things we built together. You just have to learn to make new plans. But that’s the hardest part.”

Still, her faith anchors her.

“I truly believe I’ll see him again,” she said. “I’m a person of faith—and that belief, that hope, is what gets me through.”

In the meantime, Dolly says she pours herself into her work and her music, weaving Carl’s memory into every step. “He’ll always be with me. Always,” she said. “He is, and will forever be, the star of my life story.”
