Daniel O’Donnell Urges Continued Fight Against Cancer: “Nobody Knows When It Will Strike”
Irish music legend Daniel O’Donnell has delivered a heartfelt message of hope and urgency to those affected by cancer, urging people across the country to “keep fighting” the disease—because, as he poignantly put it, “nobody knows who will get a diagnosis today, tomorrow, or sometime in the future.”
Daniel’s emotional message was shared during Donegal’s Relay for Life, a powerful 24-hour tribute held at the Atlantic University Campus in Letterkenny. Now in its 11th year, the event brings together survivors, carers, and supporters for a journey of remembrance, celebration, and hope—all while raising crucial funds for cancer research and community support services.
Although currently on a cruise to Alaska, Daniel made time to FaceTime into the event, greeting participants with warmth and encouragement:
“I hope it’s a great success. To the carers and survivors alike, I wish you all the very best. This is such an important gathering—not only for those walking today but for the many people in the future who will benefit from what you’re doing now.”
Daniel’s personal connection to the cause runs deep. In 2013, his wife Majella O’Donnell was diagnosed with breast cancer—a moment that reshaped both of their lives. Since then, Majella has become a fearless advocate, famously raising over €500,000 during a live head shave on RTÉ’s Late Late Show. Her courage and impact were recognized globally when she was named Relay for Life’s Global Hero of Hope.
Throughout the 24-hour event, hundreds gathered to walk in solidarity—honoring survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and standing united in hope. Choirs performed uplifting songs, and community events filled the air with celebration and purpose.
One of the most moving moments came during the Luminaria Candle of Hope Ceremony, as 5,000 glowing candles lit up the night—each representing a name, a memory, a fight. At the heart of the ceremony stood the Survivors Choir, performing a brand new song written especially for the occasion.
Daniel O’Donnell’s words struck a powerful chord—a reminder that while cancer touches many, the spirit of hope, community, and relentless support is even stronger.
“We don’t know when it will strike,” he said. “But we can be ready—by standing together, by raising funds, and by never giving up the fight.”
