Daniel O’Donnell Reflects on Relationship with Majella: A Journey of Faith and Family
In a candid conversation, country music star Daniel O’Donnell opened up about his personal struggles and the pivotal moment that almost led to his breakup with now-wife Majella. The beloved singer, who is known for his devotion to the Catholic faith, admitted that their relationship was initially clouded by reservations due to Majella’s past as a divorcee.
O’Donnell, who has always been upfront about his deep religious convictions, explained how he struggled to reconcile his feelings with the church’s teachings. “There was a lot to be considered, and I stepped away for a bit,” he shared in an interview with My Weekly magazine. He described the process of coming to terms with his feelings as challenging, acknowledging that his religious faith initially made it hard for him to move forward with the relationship. “It was a bit hard for me to come to terms with it because of my religious faith, but I got over that fairly quickly,” O’Donnell said.
However, O’Donnell soon realized that his emotional connection with Majella was too strong to ignore, and he made peace with the situation, deciding that pursuing happiness with her was the right choice. “I realised it was right for me to be happy,” he said. This breakthrough in his thinking paved the way for the couple to build a life together, and they eventually married in 2003 in his hometown of Kincasslagh, County Donegal, Ireland.
The couple’s relationship has been an inspiration to many, particularly with their well-known TV series, Daniel and Majella’s B&B Road Trip, which showcased their love and partnership. Despite the initial obstacles in their relationship, O’Donnell has been vocal about the joy he finds in his life with Majella. In addition to the love they share, he has also expressed great happiness in seeing Majella’s children, whom she had from a previous marriage, grow up and start families of their own.
“Majella’s children have always been a big part of my life,” he explained. “Their father is very much a part of their lives, but there was never any friction there.” O’Donnell also shared his joy in watching Majella’s daughter, Siobhan, now a mother herself, raising her own children. “Siobhan has two children, and I love to see them,” he said, speaking fondly of his step-grandchildren.
As O’Donnell approaches a new chapter in his life, he has announced plans to take a step back from his rigorous touring schedule. At 63, he shared his desire for a better work-life balance, particularly to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren. “I feel it’s time to get a different balance, so next year I’m taking a lot more time off,” O’Donnell said. “I just want to have time to enjoy the grandchildren and to be able to do things at the drop of the hat.”
Though he emphasized that he’s not retiring from music and still has a passion for performing, O’Donnell is looking forward to slowing down and savoring the time he has with his loved ones. “I’d love to continue performing, and I don’t ever see myself saying ‘I’m retired,’ but maybe more free time is what I’m looking to now – to slow down,” he shared.
