Dolly Parton’s Emotional Speech After the Death of Her Husband, Carl Dean
Shared at a private memorial and later posted to social media in a message to her fans:
“I’ve always said my songs are where I keep my secrets—but today, I’m sharing something that words can hardly carry.
As many of you know, my sweet husband, Carl Dean, passed away peacefully in our home. We were married for 58 beautiful, wild, and wonderful years. And while the world may not have known him the way I did, I want you to know… he was the love of my life.
Carl never wanted the spotlight. In fact, he spent most of our life together trying to keep me grounded while I chased every dream I had. He wasn’t just my husband—he was my best friend, my anchor, and my greatest blessing.
We met on my very first day in Nashville, at a laundromat. I was just 18, and he told me then and there he was gonna marry me. I thought he was just being sweet—but I guess he meant it, because we never looked back.
He let me shine, and he stayed in the shadows because that’s where he felt most comfortable. But behind every song I sang, every stage I stepped on, he was there—quietly cheering me on, keeping me steady, keeping me honest.
The house is a little quieter now. The porch swing sways without him. But I feel him everywhere—in the breeze, in the morning light, in the laughter we shared, and in the love he gave me that I’ll carry forever.
I want to thank everyone for your prayers, your kindness, your messages, and your understanding during this time. Grief is the price we pay for love, and I wouldn’t trade a single tear if it meant living those years again.
So don’t cry too long for us. Carl would hate a fuss. Instead, go love somebody hard. Tell them what they mean to you. Take time. Make memories. And don’t forget to laugh.
Because that’s what he gave me. A life full of love, laughter, and quiet strength. And that’s what I’ll hold onto now.
Thank you for letting me share him with you—even just a little.
I’ll always love you, Carl.”
