Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Pulled ‘Indefinitely’ by ABC After Charlie Kirk Remarks
LOS ANGELES — ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely after the host’s remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk triggered swift backlash from viewers, affiliates, and regulators.
The controversy erupted during Kimmel’s September 15 monologue, when he suggested that “the MAGA gang” was attempting to distance itself from Tyler Robinson, the 21-year-old accused of shooting Kirk, while simultaneously exploiting the tragedy for political advantage. At the time, investigators had not confirmed any motive, and critics accused Kimmel of politicizing a moment of national mourning.
Major broadcast groups, including Nexstar and Sinclair, quickly announced they would no longer carry the program. Within hours, ABC confirmed the indefinite suspension, saying the decision was made “out of respect for viewers and affiliates during a sensitive time.”
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr condemned Kimmel’s remarks as “offensive and irresponsible” and warned that further regulatory scrutiny could follow. Former President Donald Trump also weighed in, calling the comments “horrible” and applauding ABC’s move.
Supporters of Kimmel, however, argue the suspension sets a troubling precedent. Several late-night hosts and free speech advocates said the decision risks silencing satire and undermines the role of comedians in challenging political power. “If late-night hosts cannot address current events, even controversially, then what is left of free commentary?” one media analyst asked.
Kimmel has not issued a personal statement since the suspension, though his representatives said he is “reflecting on the events” as discussions with the network continue. ABC has not indicated what programming will replace Jimmy Kimmel Live! in its late-night slot.
The suspension underscores the heightened scrutiny facing television personalities in a polarized political climate. For now, one of America’s most recognizable late-night voices remains silent, and the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! is uncertain.
