Miley Cyrus has opened up about an incredibly painful health scare that she endured while co-hosting a New Year’s Eve special alongside her godmother, Dolly Parton, in 2023. During a recent appearance on The Zane Lowe Show, the 32-year-old singer-songwriter recalled the traumatic experience of an ovarian cyst rupture, which left her in excruciating pain. Despite the severity of her condition, Miley pushed through and finished the show, but it was an experience that left her reconsidering her future in the music industry.
Cyrus shared that she didn’t initially know what was happening when she began to feel unwell during the live broadcast. “I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it,” Miley explained. The rupture caused her significant pain, but she continued to perform, driven by her determination to fulfill her professional commitments.
“It was extremely excruciating, and I did the show anyway. But it was really, really hard on me,” Miley confessed, admitting that the ordeal made her question everything, including her career. The emotional and physical toll from the health scare was so severe that she considered stepping away from the music scene altogether.
However, it was a conversation with Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels that helped her gain some perspective. After dinner with him, Miley recalled that Michaels said something that stuck with her and changed her outlook on her situation: “Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild,” Michaels told her. He went on to explain, “You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were quitting music. Everyone does this, everyone has these traumatic experiences.”
This conversation with Lorne helped Miley see that struggles and health scares are common experiences in the music industry. Instead of walking away, she realized that setbacks are just part of the journey, and every artist faces challenges along the way. Miley’s resilience and commitment to pushing through tough times continue to inspire her fans and peers alike.
Despite the pain and difficulty she faced, Miley has made it clear that she’s not backing down from her career, and her continued success proves that the experience only strengthened her resolve.
