Alan Jackson, the beloved country music icon, has recently revealed that he has been living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a degenerative neurological condition, for over a decade. The 62-year-old singer shared the news in an emotional interview on NBC’s “Today” show, where he opened up about how the condition has impacted his ability to walk and maintain balance.
Diagnosed with CMT ten years ago, Jackson explained that the disease is hereditary, as he inherited it from his father. CMT affects the peripheral nervous system, causing muscle weakness, balance issues, and difficulty walking. Although it has progressively become more noticeable in recent years, the condition is not life-threatening and does not alter his life expectancy.
“It’s not going to kill me,” Jackson assured viewers. “It’s not deadly, but it’s related to muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease.” While there is no cure for CMT, Jackson emphasized that the disease can be managed with supportive therapies.
The condition has, however, made it more challenging for Jackson to perform on stage. He shared that he struggles with balance, which has affected his comfort while singing and performing. Despite this, Jackson remains determined to continue touring and performing as long as he can. He made it clear that he doesn’t plan to follow the typical “retirement tour” path many artists take, stating, “I think that’s kinda cheesy.”
Jackson, who has been a fixture in the country music scene for over three decades, also expressed his gratitude for the freedom he feels in his career now. “I feel a little more freedom now, because I’m not trying to worry about getting on the radio and fitting into their limitations,” he said.
He credits much of his strength to his wife of 41 years, Denise Jackson, who has been a constant source of support. “When I’m down, he lifts me up. When he’s down, I try to lift him up,” Denise shared, adding that their life together has been like a fairy tale.
Alan Jackson, known for his timeless music and contributions to country music, has assured fans that while CMT presents challenges, it will not stop him from performing. His resilience and determination continue to inspire fans, proving that his love for music and his fans is as strong as ever.
