Miley Cyrus has recently made a difficult decision to cancel her upcoming world tour due to health concerns with her vocal cords. After more than a decade of touring, the singer revealed that she is prioritizing her health over her career, following a diagnosis of a benign tumor on her vocal cords, which has caused hoarseness and difficulty in performing.
Cyrus, 32, explained that the large polyp on her vocal cords contributes to the unique tone of her voice, which has been an integral part of her musical identity. However, performing with it is extremely challenging for her, as she described it as “running a marathon while wearing ankle weights.”
Despite the difficulties it causes, she is hesitant to have it removed due to the high risk that surgery could result in her losing her ability to sing the way she has been known for. She said, “I don’t want to remove it because the risk of waking up from surgery and not being able to speak the way I did before is very high.”
Although her fans are supportive, Miley has revealed that she is under pressure from her godmother and mentor, Dolly Parton. Parton has been a guiding figure in Miley’s career, and while she has praised her music talents, she wasn’t particularly impressed with Cyrus’ latest album Endless Summer Vacation (2023). According to Miley, Dolly would often comment on the attention she was receiving for her image rather than her music, advising her to focus on what she was doing with her career rather than just photoshoots.

Despite the criticism, Miley’s song “Flowers” from Endless Summer Vacation went on to win significant accolades, including a Grammy for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in 2024. Miley expressed that receiving the Grammy felt like “a band-aid on my broken heart,” acknowledging the emotional healing that had come with the recognition.
Cyrus has also addressed ongoing rumors about her family, particularly regarding her relationship with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and her mother, Tish. She clarified on Instagram that despite any past challenges, she remains very close to her mother, who is her best friend.
