A HEARTFELT FAREWELL — Daniel O’Donnell Pays Emotional Tribute to Longtime Bandmate Ronnie Kennedy

There are moments in life when music becomes more than entertainment — it becomes a vessel for grief, a language to express what words alone cannot capture. For Daniel O’Donnell, that moment came on Wednesday at the funeral of his dear friend and bandmate, Ronnie Kennedy, who had been a pillar of Daniel’s musical journey for over three decades. Ronnie, who played the accordion and keyboards with Daniel’s band for decades, sadly passed away on Friday following a long and courageous battle with cancer. His passing left a void not only in the band but in the hearts of countless fans who grew to know and love his presence on stage.

Taking to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news, Daniel wrote with raw sincerity: “It is with great sadness that I write this message… Ronnie had been ill for some time and his wife Fran and all his family wanted me to thank you for your prayers during this time. As you know, Ronnie was part of my band for over 30 years. We shared some wonderful times together and I have great memories of all the many things we did. I am very grateful that I got to spend some precious time with Ronnie last Friday to say goodbye. Our loss is heaven’s gain. There will be great music and laughter in heaven now that Ronnie is there. My deepest sympathy to his wife Fran, his children Alan, Karen, Gary, Derek, and Laura, his grandchildren and all his extended family. Rest In Peace, ‘Grandad.’”

At the funeral service, Daniel honored his friend with emotional renditions of some of their most cherished songs, including In The Garden, Remember Me, Rainbow’s End, and The Rare Ould Times. Each note was imbued with the depth of their friendship, the countless performances they shared, and the memories built across decades on tour and in rehearsal rooms. For Daniel, singing these songs was more than a tribute — it was a way to communicate grief, love, and admiration all at once.

The eulogy from Ronnie’s son captured the essence of a man whose influence extended far beyond the stage. “So here I go. Ronnie, as we all know, is an incredibly gifted musician, but our dad was an even more brilliant person than he was an artist. He was a positive person for sure, and dad lived by the principle of kindness and generosity and always went out of his way to make people feel better.” These words echoed through the church, a testament to the life Ronnie led — one of music, but more importantly, of character, generosity, and unwavering kindness.

Friends, family, and fans alike gathered to celebrate Ronnie’s life, some traveling long distances to be there, all united by the love and respect they held for him. There was sorrow, certainly, but also a sense of shared gratitude for the countless ways Ronnie had touched their lives. Through Daniel’s performances, the audience felt both the depth of loss and the enduring joy that Ronnie’s music brought to the world.

In moments like these, it becomes clear that the bonds forged in music are not ephemeral. They persist, resonating in the hearts of those who listen, remember, and honor the lives of those who gave so much to their craft. Ronnie’s influence will live on in every note Daniel plays, in every melody shared with fans, and in the legacy of kindness he left behind.

As Daniel sang, one could feel the intertwining of sorrow and celebration, grief and memory, love and respect. His voice carried not just the songs they performed together but also the story of a friendship, a partnership, and a life devoted to music and to others. Ronnie Kennedy may have passed, but through Daniel O’Donnell’s heartfelt tribute, his spirit, talent, and warmth continue to resonate.

Because in the end, this was more than a farewell. It was a reminder of the enduring power of music, friendship, and the human heart, and of how one man’s life — and his generosity of spirit — can leave an imprint that lasts far beyond his time on Earth.

The church may have emptied, and the music may have quieted, but the memory of Ronnie Kennedy — “Grandad,” musician, friend, and kind soul — will echo forever in every chord, every song, and every heart he touched.
