Daniel O’Donnell gave an interview explaining his health situation, saying: “Don’t worry too much about my health. I’m very grateful for the time you spend worrying about me, but I am completely fine — no illness, nothing at all.” He added, “I worry about you even more, and because of my absence lately, I will make it up to you fully. Stay tuned to know more about what’s coming next.”

Daniel O’Donnell Explains Health Issues Behind Touring Break — “It’s Time for a Wee Bit of a Relax, But I’m Not Retiring”

Irish country music legend Daniel O’Donnell has candidly explained the health conditions that led to his decision to step back from touring in 2026, assuring fans that while he needs a rest, retirement is not on the horizon.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio One with Oliver Callan, the Donegal-born star revealed that after nearly 45 years on the road, he is ready to pause, recharge, and focus on other aspects of life.

“I decided I would take a break and have a bit of time off from touring,” Daniel said. “I will still do bits and pieces, but I’m not going to tour for a wee while. It’ll be 45 years now in January since I started with Margaret [his sister Margo] and her band, so I suppose it’s time now to have a wee bit of a relax. But I’m not retiring.”

Allergies and Chest Infections

The beloved singer went on to explain the health concerns that pushed him toward this decision, stressing that while he feels “great” now, years of constant touring have taken a toll.

“I just had a lot of allergy problems and chest infections because of that,” he told listeners. “I just have to sort myself out. I am absolutely great at the minute actually, I’ve had great help from some medical people so I am in good form.”

The comments come after growing fan speculation about his health in recent months. By speaking openly, Daniel reassured audiences that his current condition is stable and manageable, though ongoing respiratory issues made it difficult to keep up with the demands of performing night after night.

A Touch of Humor

True to form, Daniel lightened the mood with his trademark humor. Looking ahead to the All-Ireland football final between Donegal and Kerry at Croke Park, he joked that he might be taking the Sam Maguire Cup on holiday in January if his home county secured victory.

“We’re welcoming people, even Kerry people, if they’re up north they are welcome to come. They don’t need to disclose where they are from,” he laughed.

The lighthearted banter continued with fellow guest Dáithí Ó Sé, a proud Kerry man who expressed confidence that his county would take home the title. The exchange delighted listeners, who texted the programme to praise both men’s good-natured humor.

45 Years of Music and Memories

Daniel O’Donnell’s career began in 1981 when he joined his sister Margo’s band, marking the start of what would become one of the most remarkable journeys in Irish showbusiness. Over the decades, he built a loyal fan base not only in Ireland but across the UK, the US, and further afield, known for his warm stage presence and devotion to his audiences.

Now, as he reflects on 45 years in music, Daniel’s decision to slow down is seen by fans as both a bittersweet and deeply human moment. While many are saddened by the thought of fewer tours, they have expressed gratitude that the singer is prioritizing his health and well-being.

Not a Farewell

Importantly, O’Donnell emphasized that this break is not the end of his performing career. He will continue with select appearances and special events, even as he steps back from the demands of full-scale touring.

“I just felt that I needed to take a break and recharge my batteries,” he said. “But I haven’t made this decision because of ill-health or anything. It’s just because I feel the continuous touring is not suiting me now, and I need to figure out what to do.”

For his legion of fans, the message is clear: while Daniel O’Donnell may be slowing down, his music and presence are far from over. With his signature blend of sincerity and wit, he has reminded audiences once again why he remains not only a performer but a cherished part of Irish life.
