Daniel O’Donnell Feels ‘Blessed’ to Have Met Wife Majella as Couple Marks 20 Years of Marriage
DONEGAL — Beloved Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell has opened up about his marriage to wife Majella, saying he feels “blessed” to have met her when he did, as the couple quietly marked their 20th wedding anniversary this year.
In an exclusive interview with the Irish Mirror, the 61-year-old singer reflected on the milestone and shared the secret behind their long-lasting bond. “We have a lot of fun together, the two of us. We genuinely have a lot of fun, and we were blessed to have met each other when we did,” Daniel said, describing laughter as the foundation of their relationship.
The couple, who tied the knot in 2002, celebrated their anniversary earlier this year with an intimate gathering at their Donegal home surrounded by close family and friends. The occasion, though low-key, carried deep emotional weight following the recent loss of Majella’s mother, Marion, who passed away just weeks before.
Daniel recalled how Marion and his father-in-law Tom played an indirect role in his first meeting with Majella decades ago. “I knew Tom and Marion before I met Majella, so I was friendly with them and used to go out with them and all in Tenerife. Then one night, I just met Majella at their bar,” he explained. That chance encounter turned into one of Irish entertainment’s most enduring love stories.
Over the years, Daniel and Majella have become one of Ireland’s most famous couples, even starring in their own hit shows on RTÉ and in the U.S., including Daniel and Majella’s B&B Road Trip. However, the country star said fans should not expect a revival of the series. “We almost did it one last year, we were almost persuaded, but then we thought, maybe we’ve done enough. It was very successful and people enjoyed it, but sometimes maybe you can overdo things.”
Asked if they would ever consider fronting a joint chat show, Daniel laughed at the idea. “Ah God no, we’d be arguing all the time. The poor person we’d be interviewing — we’d be disagreeing and they wouldn’t get a look in.”
Beyond his family life, Daniel remains as active as ever in his career. With nearly 50 albums under his belt, he recently released How Lucky I Must Be, a collection that showcases both his enduring voice and timeless charm. A special limited signed edition of the album, which includes a DVD concert feature, is also now available.
Currently preparing for a string of international performances, Daniel has shows scheduled across the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. Despite more than four decades in music and record-breaking chart success, the Donegal native insists he never takes his career or his fans for granted.
For Daniel, both his marriage and his music are built on the same values: gratitude, joy, and a deep sense of connection. As he and Majella look toward the future, their story remains a testament to love that grows stronger with time — a partnership filled with laughter, resilience, and blessings counted daily.
