Daniel O’Donnell Risks Trouble With Playful “Pleasantly Plump” Joke to Wife Majella on B&B Road Trip
Few couples in Irish entertainment are as loved as Daniel and Majella O’Donnell, known not only for their music and charity work but also for the warmth and humor they bring to television. That humor was on full display — and nearly got Daniel into hot water — during the latest episode of Daniel and Majella’s B&B Road Trip, when the Donegal singer made a cheeky remark to his wife in front of the cameras.
The couple were visiting Geararoe Guest House in Cork, hosted by 85-year-old owner Eily Buckley, when they were shown a quirky piece of furniture in their room — a cabinet that transformed into a table, a draughts board, and, with one panel lifted, a wheelchair. When the two were left alone, Majella decided to try it out. As Daniel began to push her in the chair, he joked: “I don’t think the wheels will take it somehow.”
Majella quickly caught on, asking with mock indignation: “Are you suggesting I’m a bit on the heavy side?” Daniel, never one to back down from a playful exchange, responded with a line that left the crew — and later viewers — in stitches: “No, no, no, you’re just pleasantly plump.” He then laughed at his own daring comment, fully aware of the risk he had just taken.
The exchange showcased the couple’s natural chemistry, the kind of unscripted humor that has made their B&B adventures so popular with audiences. Fans online remarked that Daniel’s red-faced laughter and Majella’s witty retorts reflected exactly why the pair remain so relatable. Their marriage, marked by light teasing and mutual affection, often becomes the heart of the program.
But the Cork visit offered more than just banter. Daniel and Majella were clearly charmed by their host, Eily, a remarkable woman who has run her Millstreet B&B alone since her husband’s passing in 2004. A pioneer in her own right, Eily was one of Ireland’s first female coach drivers, running a school bus for 25 years. Hosting Daniel and Majella was, she said, one of the highlights of her life. “It’s a dream come true, a dream you never dare to have,” she said. “I just feel so full of joy, the pleasure this has happened to me.”
Her joy continued when the O’Donnells were named grand marshals of Millstreet’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, an honor that left both the couple and their host delighted. Riding in an open-top car, Daniel and Majella greeted crowds with their characteristic warmth, underscoring how deeply loved they are by communities across Ireland.
Their travels also took them to Bere Island Lodge in Co Cork, where they stayed with Edel and Brendan Murphy. From there, the couple immersed themselves in local activities — including a lively night at the village pub’s bingo. In typical Majella fashion, she walked away a winner. Daniel, never missing the chance for a quip, teased her once they returned to their room: “You are very lucky. You might get lucky again.”
Another highlight of their stay was joining locals for a 5km road race. While many contestants turned out in full St. Patrick’s fancy dress, Daniel and Majella opted for a slower pace, walking rather than running, and enjoying the festival spirit.
If B&B Road Trip has proven anything, it’s that Daniel and Majella are as entertaining off the stage as they are on it. Their travels are filled not only with laughter and good-natured teasing but also with heartfelt encounters that celebrate community, resilience, and the joy of everyday life.
Daniel’s “pleasantly plump” comment may have been risky, but it epitomized what fans love about the couple: their ability to laugh together, even at their own expense. And as Majella’s quick wit showed, she’s more than capable of giving as good as she gets.
