Daniel O’Donnell Urges Continued Fight Against Cancer: ‘Nobody Knows When It Will Strike’
Daniel O’Donnell, the world-renowned singer, has issued a heartfelt message of hope and encouragement for those fighting cancer, urging people across Ireland to keep up the battle against the disease, as “nobody knows when it will strike.” His remarks came as he sent his best wishes to participants in the Relay for Life event held in Donegal.
The Relay for Life Donegal event, which took place at the Atlantic University Campus in Letterkenny, serves as a 24-hour journey of hope, uniting those affected by cancer. Hundreds of people gathered at the event to celebrate cancer survivors and honor the memory of loved ones who have passed away from the disease. The annual event, which marked its 11th edition, also plays a crucial role in raising funds for cancer research and local cancer services.
Daniel, who is the patron of the event, participated in a special message from his Alaska cruise, where he facetimed in to show his support. “I hope it’s a great success,” Daniel said. “Carers and survivors alike, I wish you all the very best.” His message underscored the importance of the gathering, emphasizing how vital it is for those involved to continue raising funds to help future generations battling cancer.
“This is an important gathering for so many people and such an important gathering to raise as much money so that many people in the future will gather like you,” Daniel added, speaking passionately about the significance of the event. “We just do not know who will get a cancer diagnosis today, tomorrow, or sometime in the future.”
Daniel’s connection to the fight against cancer is deeply personal. In 2013, his wife, Majella, was diagnosed with breast cancer, which prompted the couple to become more actively involved in raising awareness and supporting cancer-related causes. Majella’s own journey with cancer has been one of immense courage, and she has since gone on to raise more than €500,000 with a live head shave on RTÉ’s Late Late Show. She is now also the Global Hero for Hope for Relay for Life, symbolizing the strength of those fighting cancer and their supporters.
The event itself featured not only continuous walking, but also a range of activities to keep the atmosphere vibrant and full of hope. One of the most emotional moments of the event was the Luminaria Candle of Hope Ceremony, where 5,000 candles were lit, illuminating the night as a symbol of remembrance and solidarity. Another central part of the ceremony was the Survivors Choir, which performed a brand new song for the first time on Saturday. The choir, led by Donal Kavanagh, a Highland Radio broadcaster and cancer survivor, was joined by Moya Brennan and her family, who provided the music. The performance of this new song, coupled with the powerful words of the survivors, brought an emotional depth to the occasion, resonating deeply with everyone in attendance.
